Green peach aphid: Myzus persicae

This aphid is a hemipterous insect of the Aphididae family. Measuring around 2mm long, it sports a light green color that blends with the hue of the foliage. Some adults do not have wings, others are winged. These are a little larger and have a black spot on the abdomen.

Much feared by gardeners, the green peach aphid attacks different plants. Prunus, including peach, are their favorite hosts. However, they also invest in vegetables from the garden such as potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, cucumbers, etc.

Virus vector

The green aphid transmits many viruses, which is why it is so formidable. Plum sharka, beet yellows, leaf roll disease, cucumber mosaic, lettuce, turnip ... This harmful insect transmits more than a hundred viruses!

Life cycle

Myzus persicae evolves on primary (prunus) and secondary (annual herbaceous) hosts. In the fall, the adults mate and the females lay eggs on the buds of peach or plum trees. They overwinter on these fruit trees before blooming in the spring, mostly in April. This first wave is exclusively made up of females, called the founders. They will give birth to about forty small larvae. Three to four generations will follow one another this same year. The first will stay on the fruit trees while the others will go for a walk on the side of the vegetable garden. At first, there are more wingless (wingless) insects, and at the end of the cycles, more winged aphids.

Symptoms and damage

Biting-sucking, green aphids take sap from peach leaves. They then begin to curl up. On the plants of the kitchen garden, the young seedlings will not be able to resist this attack and will perish.. Like other aphids, they excrete honeydew. This substance is then recovered by the ants and generates sooty mold. The other viruses transmitted by this little beast can discolor the foliage, draw round spots and marbling on the fruits or even distort the vegetables. All these nuisances endanger the life of the plant.

Fight preventively

Attract predators

Usually, when a pest is rife, there is an imbalance in biodiversity. Predators probably do not have a habitat and therefore cannot regulate this proliferating pest. The green aphid has several such as ladybugs, hoverflies, lacewings and anthocoridae. Promote their presence in the garden by installing various hedges and flowery meadows. Certain mixtures are precisely designed to accommodate these auxiliaries.

White oils

In winter, if you observe eggs on your fruit tree, treat by applying white oils. They will thus cover these parasites and block their respiratory tract. The product should then be diluted in water, as directed, and then applied with a sprayer.

Natural and organic treatments to eliminate the green peach aphid

  • Spray your fruit tree with a jet of water, applying strong pressure, the objective is to dislodge the first wave of founders
  • Remove the affected leaves and burn them
  • Spray decoctions of tansy or fern manure
  • Spray a solution of black soap and oil (1L of water with 10cl of black soap and 5cl of vegetable oil).
